West Michigan Roundup, Friday 1/28/22
Best Win: Brandywine over New Buffalo 80-64
(10-0) New Buffalo traveled to (6-4) Brandywine for a huge matchup. Brandywine came away with a 16 point victory led by 21 points from sophomore Byron Linley. It was a great bounce-back victory for Brandywine after falling to Bridgman by two points earlier this week. New Buffalo will need to put this game behind them as they will take the court again in less than 24 hours against Bridgman.
Next Best: Three Rivers over Edwardsburg 68-52
Three Rivers is one of the hottest teams in the area with six straight wins after a (2-4) start. The Wildcats knocked off Edwardsburg in a blowout victory to improve to (8-4) overall. It was junior Andrew Brown leading the way with 23 points and sophomore Angelo Hausmanis adding 22 points. Three Rivers will look to avenge an early-season loss to Otsego at home next Friday when they host the Bulldogs.
Starting Five (Notable Games):
1. West Ottawa 47, Hudsonville 44
West Ottawa continues to dig themselves out of the early season hole they were in. The Panthers have now won four out of their past five games to improve to (6-6). Kobe Haglund led West Ottawa with 15 points while Colin Shriver had 14 points. Hudsonville’s three-game winning streak came to an end despite 15 points and 10 rebounds from Aden Zank. The Eagles also received contributions from Brayden Szamrej with 9 points and 4 assists along with 9 points from Eli VanderVeen. The OK Red gauntlet continues next week with West Ottawa hosting East Kentwood and Hudsonville traveling to Grand Haven.
2. Unity Christian 67, Coopersville 36
The Coopersville hype train has come to an end with the Broncos falling to Allendale and Unity Christian this week. The Crusaders defeated Coopersville in blowout fashion led by 27 points from senior star Gabe Newhof. Unity has now made it through the first half of conference play and still remains a perfect (12-0) overall. I believe that the Crusaders will finish the regular season with an undefeated record unless they slip up at West Catholic next month.
3. Calvin Christian 75, NorthPointe Christian 62
Calvin Christian take sole possession of first place in the OK Silver after defeating NorthPointe Christian at home. Calvin Christian trailed at halftime but erased the deficit in the third quarter pulling away for the win. The Squires were led by senior Brady Haisma with 25 points and junior Carson DeHaan with 20 points. Calvin Christian is now (8-3) with a perfect (7-0) conference record after starting the season (0-3).
4. Northview 69, East Grand Rapids 36
Northview improves to (10-0) with a blowout home victory over East Grand Rapids. It was senior Kyler Vanderjagt leading the way with 21 points for the Wildcats. Simon Neuhaus scored 18 points in the loss for EGR. This was the fourth straight 30+ point victory for Northview who has defeated every opponent by double-digits this season. The Wildcats will be tested next week with Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday and then Brother Rice at The Showcase on Saturday.
5. River Valley 68, Eau Claire 60
River Valley improves to (8-2) with a pivotal home victory over Eau Claire. River Valley will get another crack at division-leader New Buffalo next Friday after falling by 12 points in the first meeting. Eau Claire drops to (8-2) with the loss and will play again next Friday against Howardsville Christian.

Game I Attended: Cassopolis 38, Comstock 31
Comstock hosted Cassopolis in a pivotal game for the Southwest 10 standings. Comstock entered (6-1) in conference play one game behind (7-0) Centreville while Cassopolis entered (5-2). Comstock’s two leading scorers Israel Patterson and Josh Allan did not dress for the game leaving the Colts in a tough situation. Comstock trailed 7-3 after the first quarter and only attempted five shots the whole quarter. Cassopolis went scoreless until the 3:45 mark of the second quarter as Comstock tied the game up at halftime 13-13. The Colts took a 17-13 lead halfway through the third quarter until Cassopolis countered with an 8-0 run to regain the lead. The Rangers would hold a 23-19 lead entering the final quarter. Cassopolis began to pull away leading 27-21 with 5:57 remaining. Comstock came charging back when JR Kellum made one of two free throws and the Colts corralled the offensive rebound leading to a Mason Mollohan three-pointer. With 4:50 remaining Tarik Ross hit a three-pointer for Comstock to take a 28-27 lead on a 7-0 run. Following that three-pointer, things began to unravel for Comstock who turned the ball over on five straight possessions as they looked to play up-tempo. Cassopolis pulled away with too much strength and athleticism inside from Davion Goins and Daishean Jamison. The Rangers led 38-28 until freshman Davon Gordon made a three at the buzzer for Comstock to pull within 7 points. Comstock played hard motivated basketball for most of the game until the turnovers unraveled their chance at a short-handed victory. JR Kellum led the Colts with 11 points while Mason Mollohan added 10 points. Cassopolis kept their conference title hopes alive and were led by Daishean Jamison with 11 points off the bench while Davion Goins and Daeton Gillam chipped in 10 points each.
