Jackson Lumen Christi uses strong second half to win third straight division six title
DETROIT, Michigan- Tied 14 to 14 at half the Jackson Lumen Christi Titans needed a big second half to pull away from the Montague Wildcats.
“It was a hard hitting, tough football game,” Jackson Lumen Christi head coach, Herb Brogan said. “We had a few less kids going both way that they did and that paid dividends.”
The Titans scored 28 points in the second half, while shutting down the Montague offense for most of the second half until Montague threw two long touchdowns (48 and 78 yards) late in the fourth quarter.
The two touchdowns were the only points Montague scored in the second half.
“It comes down to playing with pain in the second half,” Brogan said. “You are going to be uncomftbale and whether or not you can put up with that discomfort.”
With the 42 to 28 win, Jackson Lumen Christi has captured their third straight title and the 11th in school history.
Thomas runs wild
Air force commit Nick Thomas ran all over the Montague defense as he rushed for 249 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns.
“I wanted to do whatever we could do to win,” Thomas said. “It’s about the team and that is what it was about for me.”
Thomas picked up 57-yards on a single run that tied the game up at seven in the first quarter for the Titans.
The 6 foot, 190 pound senior captured his third state title in his four years at Jackson Lumen Christi.
Stark and Schwarz have good days despite loss
Senior Bryce Stark had a good day despite his team losing the state title. Stark rushed for 156 yards, two touchdowns on 19 carries.
“After the first run I realize they were prepared for it,” Stark said. “I knew I had to keep my head down and keep pumping my feet.”
Junior Brennan Schwarz caught two passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Schwarz will be a key for Montague heading into next season.
Keller dominates on both sides of the ball
Senior tight end/ defensive end Dayton Keller helped keep the Montague offense ineffective in the second half for the Titans.
Keller finished the game with six tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery on the defensive side of the ball.
On offense Keller had two catches for 20 yards and one touchdown.
Keller also had many key blocks on big runs for the Titans and was a key part all season for Lumen Christi to complete the three-peat.
