Cranbrook falls short in comeback, loses in season opener to Madison Heights Lamphere 63-56.
Nearly completing a comeback, the Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes lost their season opener to the Madison Heights Lamphere Rams 63-56 on the road. Cranbrook begins their season at 0-1, while Lamphere moves to 1-0 on the young season.
Sophomore Cooper Gurman scored 16 points while senior Brandon McCaskill added 11 points to lead the Cranes.
Junior Sema-j Ramsey scored 27 points to lead the Rams.
Lamphere got off to a fast start holding a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. But Cranbrook fought back behind sophomore Ryan Aggarwal points in the paint and from the charity stripe.
Cranbrook trailed 29-16 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Cranes push forward as Aggarwal and senior Ben McCaskill scored big three-point shots to keep the Cranes momentum going. But Ramsey put in a couple of big shots to counter the Cranbrook advance.
The Cranes trailed 44-32 at the end of the third quarter.
Gurman put Cranbrook back in the hunt with 3 big shots from beyond the arc, along with clutch free throws from junior Evan Evans.
But In the end, Lamphere converted on key possessions as time ran out giving them the victory.
Lamphere hosts Warren Woods Tower later this week, while Cranbrook moves on to face Bloomfield Hills Roeper at home on Thursday.
